Prices are the entry list prices each vendor publishes on its own US pricing page, read on Oct 27, 2026. They exclude taxes, payment processing unless stated, hardware, add-ons and negotiated discounts; a promotion appears only in the notes, labeled as one. Prices change. No vendor paid for a place or a price in this table.

The real question here is where the work is coordinated. ServiceM8 is positioned for small mobile service teams that want a field-first workflow. Housecall Pro is positioned for home-service shops that prioritize dispatch, customer communication and office usability. One assumes the truck is the office; the other assumes there is an office sending the trucks. Our verdict is editorial and based on published scope and help articles, without trial accounts.

Verdict: Housecall Pro, unless the truck is your office

For a contractor with roughly 3 to 50 technicians and at least one person coordinating from a desk, pick Housecall Pro. Its emphasis on dispatch and customer updates fits a business where someone other than the technician decides who goes where.

Pick ServiceM8 when the team is small, the owner still works in the field, and the main job of the software is to let each person quote, complete and get paid from a phone.

Where Housecall Pro wins

Coordination from an office and growth into more locations. Housecall Pro's help center documents a parent account with a child account per location, where branch staff see only their location, parent admins move between children, customers roll up to the parent with a location column, and jobs and estimates reports can be filtered and exported by location. It also lists limits: price books are not pulled across children, and each child needs its own QuickBooks connection. For a contractor planning a second branch, that is a documented path; for a three-person crew, it is capacity you will not use.

Where ServiceM8 wins

Getting paid in the field, with documented terms. ServiceM8 says its legacy Stripe Payments add-on can no longer be activated by new customers and points them to ServiceM8 Pay. ServiceM8 Pay is processed by Stripe, requires connecting a new or existing Stripe account, and documents several ways to take a card: Tap to Pay on eligible phones, Scan & Pay by QR code on the customer's own device, manual card entry, and a Pay Now button on online invoices. Payouts land the business day after processing; card fees are per transaction and listed on a separate page; and ServiceM8 Pay is available only on monthly subscription plans, not per-job pricing. ServiceM8 also says Stripe is the only card processor it supports.

That is a narrow, clear setup for a crew that collects on the doorstep. Its on-site options matter less to a business whose office bills after the visit. The articles do not cover refunds or how payment status returns to the job, so test both.

When a field-first team grows

If a crew that starts on a phone-centered tool hires its first coordinator, that hire is the moment to revisit the choice, because the coordinator's day is spent on the board, not in the field. Until then, adding an office-oriented platform mostly adds screens nobody opens.

The deciding test

Ask who decides tomorrow's schedule. If it is an office coordinator juggling several technicians, choose Housecall Pro and test a disrupted morning on its dispatch board. If it is the owner, from the truck, choose ServiceM8 and run a full job on one phone: quote, complete, take a Tap to Pay or QR payment, then refund part of it and confirm the job shows what happened.

  3. vendorServiceM8 help: How to get started with ServiceM8 PayServiceM8 · checked Oct 16, 2026 · supports: ServiceM8 help article stating that ServiceM8 Pay payments are processed by Stripe, that setup requires connecting either a new or an existing Stripe account, and that a business switching from the Stripe Payments add-on gets an additional ServiceM8 Pay profile in its existing Stripe account, through which all card payments accepted via ServiceM8 are then processed. It lists Tap to Pay on eligible phones, Scan & Pay by QR code on the client's own device, manual card entry and a Pay Now button on online invoices, with payouts the business day after processing, card fees described as pay-as-you-go and per transaction, and availability only on monthly subscription plans rather than per-job pricing. It sets no deadline for switching, lists the fee amounts on a separate page, and does not cover refunds or how payment status returns to the job.
