Prices are the entry list prices each vendor publishes on its own US pricing page, read on Oct 27, 2026. They exclude taxes, payment processing unless stated, hardware, add-ons and negotiated discounts; a promotion appears only in the notes, labeled as one. Prices change. No vendor paid for a place or a price in this table.
Housecall Pro ranks second in our overall order, and its emphasis is clear: dispatch, customer communication and office usability for home-service shops. Replacing it makes sense when that emphasis is the wrong one for your business. We see three such cases and rank the alternatives accordingly. The judgment is ours, built from published positioning and help articles rather than trial accounts.
The order
- Jobber. When the office wants a cleaner line from quote to job to invoice more than a richer dispatch board.
- Workiz. When the phone sets the schedule and technicians need to be told about changes as calls come in.
- ServiceM8. When the team is small, mobile and runs most of the work from the field rather than an office desk.
Why Jobber is first
For our core reader, a contractor with roughly 3 to 50 technicians, Jobber is the default pick, and it is the most natural landing place from Housecall Pro: the same kind of customer, but positioning centered on the path from quote through job and invoice. If your Housecall Pro frustration is that estimates, approvals and invoices feel scattered across features you do not use, that focus is the point. Jobber's published materials state positioning rather than learning time, so make speed of adoption a trial check: give a technician the app without training and see whether they can complete and document a job.
Why Workiz is second
Workiz positions itself around calls, scheduling, dispatch and technician communication together. That overlaps with Housecall Pro's dispatch strength, but the starting point differs: the inbound call rather than the scheduled job. A plumbing or locksmith-style shop that books most work while the customer is on the line may find that framing closer to its day. Ask for a live walkthrough of a call that turns into a dispatched job and a technician notification, using your own service area and job types.
Why ServiceM8 is third
ServiceM8 is positioned as a field-first tool for small mobile teams, and its payment documentation is specific. ServiceM8 Pay is processed by Stripe, requires connecting a new or existing Stripe account, and lists Tap to Pay on eligible phones, Scan & Pay by QR code on the customer's own device, manual card entry and a Pay Now button on online invoices. Payouts arrive the business day after processing, card fees are per transaction, and ServiceM8 Pay is available only on monthly subscription plans, not per-job pricing. ServiceM8 also states that Stripe is the only card processor it supports. That clarity helps a small crew; the field-first design is the reason it sits third for a business with a real office.
When to stay on Housecall Pro
Stay if you run more than one location through its parent-and-child account structure. Its help article describes child accounts per location, branch staff who see only their location, parent admins who switch between children, and customers that roll up to the parent with a location column. Rebuilding that elsewhere is a project, not a setting. The same article documents two limits, price books that cannot be pulled across child accounts and a separate QuickBooks connection per child. Weigh them, but these limits alone don't justify migrating every customer record and job history.
The question that settles it
Ask where your office loses the most time today. If it is quoting and invoicing, trial Jobber. If it is the gap between a ringing phone and a dispatched technician, trial Workiz. If there is barely an office and the owner runs jobs from a truck, trial ServiceM8. Whichever you pick, export one month of Housecall Pro jobs and customers first and check that the history you need will import cleanly.
