Inventory-heavy service exposes the boundary between field operations and financial control. ServiceTitan, Service Fusion, and Salesforce Field Service are useful shortlist hypotheses, but no feature label proves that a particular stock model will reconcile. This assessment uses published criteria and does not report an executed test.

Buyer scenario: the part moves before the record

Imagine a mechanical-service company receiving parts into a warehouse, transferring some to trucks, reserving others for scheduled work, and returning unused material. A technician may substitute an equivalent part during an urgent repair while purchasing and billing still need an intelligible record.

Draw each physical location and every event that changes quantity, ownership, cost context, or job association. Include receipt, transfer, reservation, issue, consumption, return, damage, adjustment, and supplier return. Decide which system is authoritative at every stage and who investigates differences.

Decision criteria for stock-linked work

ServiceTitan is the trade-operations candidate when inventory should participate in a broader service workflow. Service Fusion is relevant when warehouse, dispatch, technicians, and billing need a shared operational record. Salesforce Field Service deserves attention when stock and service records must fit a deliberately governed architecture.

Evaluate item identity, units, locations, truck stock, reservations, purchase activity, substitutions, returns, count adjustments, permissions, history, offline capture, job consumption, invoice handoff, integrations, exports, and administrator effort. Ask each vendor to document the configuration and system boundaries behind its demonstration.

Reproducible evaluation plan

Create a fictional repair requiring one stocked part and one ordered part. Receive inventory, transfer the stocked item to a truck, reserve it, substitute another item in the field, return the original, partially receive the ordered item, and correct a mistaken quantity. Have warehouse, dispatcher, technician, and finance roles perform their steps.

Compare physical expectation with the system record after every event. Score re-entry, hidden queues, unsupported units, correction history, mobile friction, reconciliation visibility, and export completeness. This script can be repeated across finalists; no outcome from running it is claimed here.

Edge case: a truck count disagrees

Suppose the technician has the substitute physically, but the system assigns it to another truck and connectivity is unavailable. Ask whether work can continue, how the pending use is represented, what happens after synchronization, and who resolves the discrepancy. Preserve both the original and corrected entries.

ServiceTitan must show that trade depth remains usable in the field. Service Fusion must keep office ownership clear. Salesforce Field Service must make integration and record conflict visible. A silent last-write correction or deleted adjustment provides weak evidence.

Before selection, reconcile the scripted inventory outside the application. Export item, location, transfer, reservation, consumption, return, and adjustment records, then ask finance and operations to derive the expected ending position independently. Differences should lead to a documented mapping question, not an averaged score. Also estimate the effort to clean item masters, units, duplicate identifiers, truck assignments, and open purchase activity before launch. Assign ownership for cycle counts, discrepancy review, integration failures, and changes to the item model. Inventory accuracy depends on continuing process discipline after implementation attention ends.

Include one low-value consumable and one scarce part in the cleanup sample. The organization may reasonably govern them differently, but those rules must be explicit. Ask how negative availability, pending transfers, damaged items, and substitute approvals appear to dispatch and field staff. A precise warehouse report is not enough if the technician cannot distinguish material that is physically usable from stock that is merely recorded somewhere.

Conclusion: reconcile the physical and digital paths

Choose ServiceTitan when a trade-centered operating system matches the stock process, Service Fusion when shared-office coordination is the main need, or Salesforce Field Service when inventory participates in a larger governed architecture. Require an accountable reconciliation process, sample exports, and explicit integration ownership. The best choice is the one that makes discrepancies discoverable and correctable without slowing every technician action.
